6 Things To Avoid Before Starting to Dig Your Deck Piers
These are six things I wish I would consider before building each deck.
1. Soil Condition: is it fill dirt with lots of big rocks?
2. Elevated Piers need sonotubes.
3. Don't let wet soil touch your posts or it will rot.
4. Remove old piers or bury them?
5. Make sure to size your old deck piers and/or replace them with properly sized piers that will carry the weight of your new deck.
5.B. Avoid frost heave to prolong the life of your deck.
6. What kind of anchoring system will you use? J-hooks or tapcons are two great options.

I am not a venting expert, just a plumber with some venting experience. When I bought my 20-year old house, the range hood was not connected to any venting whatsoever, a code violation in BC. The top of the cupboards was lined with uncleanable grease which I paved over with plywood. I ended up venting it with ABS pipe directly through the roof. I terminated it with a hardware store low-profile aluminum vent that covers it to keep the rain and snow meltwater out of the kitchen. The key here, for the uninitiated, is to get advice on how to integrate and overlay your current roofing material with the vent cover. Caulking alone will not suffice, but you will need tar-style caulking additionally. Ask a roofer friend to demo the method for you. Otherwise, its a doable DIY project. A last thought is safety. I had a friend both hold the ladder and be ready with a cellphone should I fall off ! A fall might incapacitate your ability to phone for help.

I see just few things right off the bat that would help you a little bit if you ever find yourself doing this again. Just from my experience if you were to scrape back or sand about 6 to 10 inches of the existing texture around or in this case on both sides of the repair it gives you more area to then try and feather your new texture into the old. Another thing is I wouldn’t advise using the mud right out of the bucket the way it comes. It is in fact pre mixed mud but you need to always get a paddle mud mixer attachment for a good drill and mix that mud up real good yourself. What that does is if you notice you can sometimes see a bit of water just sitting on top of the mud when you first open it so when you mix it yourself with the drill essentially it gives you the right consistency your looking for. If it’s still too thick you can always add a LITTLE bit of water at a time until you get it how you want it. Less is more bc you can always add water but if you thin it too much you will then have to add more mud to make up the difference. It’s a battle sometimes but the more you do it you will figure it out and probably find your own ways you like to prepare the mud for the stomp texture. Good luck and I hope this may help some of you guys and gals out there that are just now trying to learn this technique!

I first fill some soil tamp down to avoid the heavy cement moving down, tamping it for me throughout time. It also allows not creating a cement bowl, trapping water. I use a 50lb bag of cement mix for post. I try to leave about 7 ish inches on top for soil, but before backfilling I treat it with oil. These fence are fun and easy to work with.

Hearing the little man watching on in the background, reminds me of my grandson, who for an under three year old, has the most analytical, hands on approach that I have seen in a child. Hopefully I will live to 90 to see what becomes of him, 😀 Our young ones can learn much just from being around the workers. Great clip.

Yellow lights have been lauded for this purpose for years if not decades. Problem is it just attracts FEWER bugs especially if there are any white/blue/ultraviolet lights within sight like at a neighbors house. But it does NOT repel or even attract zero bugs. So it’s an improvement but not a cure

This is what gives Sharkbites a bad reputation......improper installation.

Tighten the packing nut or replace the packing. Often times the packing nut will leak if it hasnt been turned off in a long time. Usually you just tighten it a quarters to half turn and ur good. Save yourself the trouble of replaceing the whole valve. Its a stop valve not a gate valve. The rubber washer can be replaced along with the bibb screw that holds it in. A valve that can be maintenanced replace the parts it will last as long as the brass will last. We live in a throw away society.
